Why did the eye profession resist a non-invasive treatment of cataract that maintained natural lens function for so long?  And continues to do so.

Why were so many anticataract research groups around the world disbanded about 20 years ago?

Why did the eye profession overtly deny their responsibility,  and desert cataract patients who could not or did not want to submit to the surgery?

I guess these questions are not too hard to answer.

After all, the cataract surgery market, in the US alone, is only worth a trivial $14 billion per annum - inclusive of surgeons, diagnostic and surgical equipment, hospitals and support staff. 

And it's still continuing to grow at an alarming pace.

If upcoming clinical trials of cataract reversal eyedrops prove successful, and it looks like they will, most of that $14 billion would vanish very quickly.   Many surgery-related websites are already getting a bit jittery.   But I don't see cataract patients shedding any tears - even if they don't have dry eye.
