The trouble is though a lot of us wake up with our lips stuck together because the wounds are pressed together. It isn't very good for oral hygiene to sleep with the mouth open wide I know but I am not suggesting we do. I think personally if I was able to sleep without my lips touching for a week it would potentially be the final step in curing them - I just need to find the equipment to trial it. Barriers alone are not enough to stop the stickiness because of the pressure applied from the mouth the barrier is squeezed out or dissolved in saliva.
