Why has the issue of patent ownership of the Zika virus not been the object of media coverage?

Because some, not all of the populace might figure this thing out. However, I think some people just like living in fear. Having the CDC watching their backs is strangely comforting to many. Plus, it just saves them from having to actually read & internalize real information. They have been indoctrinated on spoon feeding for their education and have no critical thinking skills. Our society has been hardwired to believe their government actually cares about them.
