Not really a hate crime then.
I would disagree. Whether there were multiple people involved, or not, Mateen was full of hate. Mateen's father is reported to be a type of radical Islam - a fundamentalist, initially coming out with the following statement he made:
"God will punish those involved in homosexuality," saying it's, "not an issue that humans should deal with."-- Seddique Mateen, father of the shooter
The Islamic religion is quite well known for its basic teaching of sexual repression / suppression, with very harsh punishment for those that are engaged in homosexualality - death being the punishment in many Muslim countries. With the suppression of sex energy within vast numbers of a country's population, it will have a tantamount effect of a culture becoming quite hostile in general, especially toward other cultures that are more tolerant of loose mores regarding sexual preference - take Sweden, for example.
Other so-called "established religions" also teach sexual suppression. Christianity has been more known for this within its Catholic priesthood - that's why so much abuse of children & young women has been reported. So, its not just radical Islam, imo.
You also have to take in all the animosity the Middle East has toward the Western nations, for all the drone strikes & bombings that has been done, these people have a good deal of built-up hatred toward the West - thanks to GW 'baby' Bush, Hitlary Clinton, and not to leave out Obummer.
And so, it seems to me that you have to immediately start somewhere to try to put a lid on this type of violence, at least in the near term, initially. Halting the immigration from Middle Eastern nations is paramount, imo, until a better vetting system can be developed. Calling such a move to be racist, or discriminating against one's religion, is absurd. Its cultural ideaology, period. I don't consider the so-called "established religions" to be really authentic religiousness. To hell with the notion that this is politically incorrect.
That's just in my opinion.
