Hi everyone,
Like someone else in this forum, I am also waiting for Nitazoxanide from mexico - medsmex.com - it takes about a month to receive, considering I live in Canada and am getting someone to recieve it for me in NY. I ordered the max amount, 8 packs of 6 pills, so 24 days worth.
I presently have on hand, Metronidazole (750mg x 2 for 10 days) and Paromomycin aka Humatin (500mg x 3 for 7 days). Haven't taken those yet. The doctor I saw recently said the 3 top treatments are Metronidazole, Paromomycin and Nitazoxanide. Nitazoxanide is not available in Canada unfortunately, so needed to special order from abroad. Metro and Paromomycin are actually supposed to be used together for amoebiasis, according to the Merck Manual - http://www.merckmanuals.com/professional/infectious-diseases/intestinal-protozoa/amebiasis
There is an anecdotal account of someone using Metro, Paro, and Nitaz. together http://www.blastocystis.net/search/label/nitazoxanide
Additionally, there is an anecdotal account of a man named Mike Hodgens using 30 days worth of just Nitazoxanide to kill off Blasto after two separate occasions of him ingesting contaminated waters, several years apart. https://adietitiangonepaleo.wordpress.com/nasty-parasites/
The dosage is very important. Too many people take Nitazoxanide for just 3 or 10 days by itself, and that is apparently not enough. Studies document people taking 14 days, at least, of just Nitazoxanide, to erradicate Blasto with a 86% success rate at this dosage, much better success than Metronidazole which is only 34% and who knows if those are false negatives being recorded too soon after treatment. I myself took Metronidazole and tested a false negative 3 weeks after (too soon), but retested as positive 4 months later. Metro only kills the adults, but not the cysts. The cysts go into defense mode in the presence of Metro.
Likewise, many doctors, like my doctor included, didn't know that Metronidazole is no good unless you pair it with Paromomycin. The reason being for the combination of drugs and 'triples' is because the extraintestinal drugs like Metronidazole, which are absorbed into the body and blood stream, combat the adults and any extraintestinal infections. The lumen-specific drugs like Paromomycin are not absorbed by the body at all, and remain in the colon, and they are good at killing the cysts, something which Metronidazole is very bad at doing, by itself. It seems that they don't realize this, and they also don't prescribe a long enough dose of Nitazoxanide if used by itself. It seems that Nitazoxanide kills both adults and cysts, but it needs a longer time to do so.
So if you are going to combine drugs, make sure you are combining the right ones that take care of the adults, as well as the cysts. And make sure you are taking them for long enough to do the job.
