Not to sound totally arrogant, but I'm gonna chime in and say yeah, we definitely have an inflammatory condition, yeah it's definitely immune driven.

But considering 85% of your immune is located in your gut, I'd say intestinal health plays a really big role in this. Just like eczema and psoriasis, EC can be managed with topicals and even sent totally in to remission (like that case study of the girl in Iran with EC, and it stated antifungals and Antibiotics both oral and topical managed the condition but it would return upon cessation use.) She ended up healing and doing the constant moisture method with aquaphor, hc 1% and a urea 10% cream btw. So there's a really good example of how skin conditions can be sent in to remission even though it's really clear the problem was actually in the patients intestinal flora with short term antifungals/abx helping alter her immune/gut flora.

Why do you think people have such success on the candida diet? Or even in general, a LOT of the success cases all have one thing in common, they all took probiotics or detoxed. Because they're flooding their body with good bacteria and reducing toxic load, thus boosting their immune system without even realising. Or even longterm healing after taking sporanox? Candida overtakes the body when there isn't enough good bacteria to keep it in check.

This is simply a case of not having a diverse/friendly range of bacteria to combat the pathogenic bacteria and yeast.

Also, some people have issues with staph. Staph is found in the intestines too, it mirrors the microbes found on your skin. Eg if you have an over growth of staph or yeast in your intestines, chances are you have an overgrown of staph or yeast on your skin too.

Why do you think so many EC cases occur after taking Antibiotics , high stress or accutane? They all alter your gut flora and cause intestinal irritation.

And lastly, just so the other EC readers don't freak out thinking they're stuck with this thing for life and have to go on some toxic immunomodulatory drug as their only hope:

I've SEEN people reverse 'autoimmune conditions'. It's very common. Eczema, psoriasis, asthma, allergies, MS etc etc. GAPS diet, anti candida diet, liver flushing, FMT are all great and REAL ways to reverse autoimmune conditions. No offence jsl123, but you're talking like EC is some rare form of cancer. It's not. It's a skin condition and as long as you didn't get it from direct and repeated trauma, I'd say the cause is fairly similar.

Constant moisture/leave it alone aids in reducing trauma, but the real source is internal. And if you've done enough research, you'll know that it's 100% reversible. There's a cure for every disease. Be positive, start doing some homework, and if you're serious about wanting to get rid of EC, you'll start from the inside and not cause any more trauma on the outside by peeling your lips!!!

Ps I know first hand that it's lack of good bacteria. My derm put me on Antibiotics because he said I had an 'infection' without even taking a swab, I took 4 days worth of the script, my EC spread and got significantly worse. I am now taking heavy probiotics, on a candida diet (have been for a while) and eating heaps of saurkraut/taking herbal antifungals, and I think the damage from the antibiotics might be calming down and maybe even reversing.

I hope this helps someone out there. I'll let you guys know how I go with everything :)
