Lyin’ Ted. Little Marco. Jeb “Low Energy” Bush.” If there’s one thing Donald Trump has done very well this campaign season, its come with catchy nicknames for his opponents. Now, the Republican frontrunner has one for Hillary Clinton, his potential rival in the general election this fall:
Crooked Hillary.
He debuted the nickname this weekend at a rally in Watertown, New York, reports The Hill. He had previously called her “incompetent Hillary,” but apparently Trump decided that lacked the je ne sais quoi of his other nicknames.
“Crooked Hillary” is clearly an attempt by Trump to build on the general view among voters that Clinton is untrustworthy, a view bolstered by the still percolating email scandal and the Benghazi situation that has haunted her since her says at the State Department.
Trump’s nicknames have been a fairly effective tactic so far this election season. His needling of Marco Rubio clearly got the Florida Senator off his game, to the point where Rubio tried to hit back by calling Trump “Big Donald” — which sounds more like a term of endearment for a fraternity buddy than anything else.
