DESCRIPTION
I am a 14 year old male who has had exfoliative cheilitis for 4 months now. i believe my condition isn't as bad as others as there is no pain or stinging inflamation. however when peeled too early it would sting slightly. i believe my ec was caused by the overuse of lip balm. Most likely the ingredients in lip balm just irritated the skin and dried it up. There are 4 ways my lips will look like depending on the products im using : Flat and dead, Thick and Dry, Raw and white and mushy
My peeling cycle changes depending on the products i use and other factors. 3-4 days sometimes if it weakens and i just wipe it off. 1 week sometimes and 2 weeks when i try with all my heart not to touch it frequently.
THINGS I HAVE TRIED
I went to the skin doctor who prescribed me a steroid (not sure the name of it) it didnt do anything.
I used nothing for a day or two and i realised the skin was not peeling it was just dry and thick. The skin doctor recommended i use the lip balm again to moisturise it again. However it caused the peeling to start again (i didn't know at the time that the lip balm was causing my ec)
i used vaseline for a week and it seemed to do nothing.
Then i used a healing balm (not sure name but i had beeswax and a bunch of oils) it didnt do much. I drank through straw and made sure water didnt get on my lips. The skin didnt peel for 1-2 weeks. The skin was extremely easy to peel on touch and it could come off. So i wiped it off easily and applied some honey (which seemed to help)
HONEY- is anti inflammatory anti-bacterial and antifungal so it seemed pretty good and it moisturised pretty well, it also slowed down the skin dieing rate
I still continued not getting water on my lips as i believed it was better that it didnt peel frequently. Everyweek when the skin got slightly old i would encourage it to peel (warm water or oils). This was a mistake as it only came back faster and instead of the skin being even in sections, it became like little scabs here and there (very uneven). So obviously peeling it off just becuase it seems slightly weak was a bad thing
I used oils such as coconut, grapeseed and horse oil but none worked. horse oil made my dead skin all mushy and i just wiped that off (probrably bad cause it just grew back faster) horse oil might be good but i just assumed it was bad coz it made the deadskin all mushy
I continued to use the honey for a few weeks but eventually the honey just stopped being effective
I cloderm (a steroid) and Johnsons Baby Oil on raw skin. The next day the skin looked pretty good. The day after back to dead skin.
WHAT IT COULD BE??
Trauma via lipbalm and slight peeling here and there
Excema (I had it as an infant however it went away milk caused me the excema)
The new skin cells don't know how to exfoliate
Keratin overgrowth as it is dry and the thick skin is to trap moisture
WHAT I COULD DO??
Put some moisturiser and let the skin peel by itself every 2 weeks
Not do anything (let it naturally heal overtime)
Glycolic acid constant exfoliation (I'm not sure about this one i just found it on the internet) apparently the acid would weakien the dead skin allowing it to come off. it would also help the new skin to eventually grow normally (something to do with skin cells)
WHAT I HAVE DONE
-stopped mouth breathing
-no water on lips
-drink more water
-ate a slighter healthier diet
-put on a moisturiser
-starting as of now to not peel (when i peel the skin looks weak and old however probs not ready to come off)
JUST WONDERING IF ANYONE HAD ANY IDEAS OR SUGGESTIONS???
