Rainy: I believe in tongues which is prayer language even as the Apostle Paul did. He said he prayed in the Spirit and with his understanding.

me: I think you are talking about this passage, right?

1 Corinthians 14:
Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful. 15 What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also; I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will sing with my mind also. 16 Otherwise, if you give thanks with your spirit, how can anyone in the position of an outsider say Amen to your thanksgiving when he does not know what you are saying? 17 For you may be giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not being built up. 18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 19 Nevertheless, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue.

To me, in verse 14 and 15, Paul is saying that if he prays in a tongue, he's not going to understand what he's praying. So instead he says he will pray with his spirit and mind which to me that means he will pray in his own language so he can understand what he is praying and his mind won't be unfruitful. And then he will sing in his own language too.

Then in verse 16, I think he's saying if you give thanks (say a prayer of thanksgiving to God) in a tongue, no one is going to understand you, so don't do that. Give thanks in the language everyone can understand.

And then in verse 19, he's saying he would rather speak five words in his own language (with his mind), than ten thousand words in a tongue they wouldn't understand.

We all know how useless it feels to be around someone speaking a foreign language and we can't understand a word they are saying. It's just a waste of time for everyone involved. I think that's his whole meaning here.

But over and over we'll see someone supposedly speaking in tongues, with no interpreter, or groups of people supposedly all speaking in tongues at once, which Paul warned against as well. All that is just wasting people's time because no one is getting anything out of that, but many are continually deceived thinking the person or group doing that must be really holy or something, you know?
