Commercial lip balms can cause peeling lips.

The reason for this paradoxical effect is the fact that they contain emulsifiers (detergent like chemicals) which break down the natural oils present in the lips.

The best products to use as lip balms would be naturally derived products like cocoa butter or shea butter.

of course peeling lips can be indicative of nutritional issues so be sure to consider this aspect.
