Hey there! I completely understand your concerns. I was in the same or at least similar shoes. I've done several short (week long) fasts for warmup for two longer (~1month) fasts. I had a set of symptoms doctors could do nothing about (inability to sleep, headaches, brainfog, complete exhaustion, near-diabetes insulin resistance, complete impotence, etc...).

I thought fasting is bullshit, a religious activity or something similar, but a 3 week fast eliminated almost all of my symptoms and my body composition changed from 20+% fat to about 10-15 and I felt fantastic. I tried fasting only as a last resort without expecting anything from this stupid method because I wanted to die anyway. Your friend says exactly the same as anyone else would say about fasting: "it's unhealthy", "it's bullshit". Just ask average people if you want to accumulate reasons to avoid fasting.

Here is my opinion about your friend's opinion: How does she know that fasting is unhealthy? Currently Science knows nearly nothing about complex chemical mechanisms of our body, this involves normal functioning, medication, nutrition, etc... We are still just experimenting and finding ways that solve problems because we don't yet have an accurate enough map of the body. This is basically the same primitive method humans have always used. So how does your friend know that fasting is unhealthy? Has she tried it?

Basically everything you do has both harmful and beneficial effects. Your food keeps you alive and poisons you at the same time. The important thing is to choose ways where the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Making smart investments with low risk and high reward like in any other area of life. Most people avoid risks all the time even if it's very low. It is no different with fasting. A long fast is very difficult and during the fast you may feel terrible but I think not so many people have the experience one can have on the first few days of refeeding, especially if fasting cured some severe symptoms.

Fasting, just like anything else is also harmful. Stressed body, high cortisol, weakness, fatigue, etc... But the gifts you get at the end of the fast by far outweigh the difficulties and disadvantages.

Btw, what do you risk by trying it? Do you use your friends opinion as an excuse to avoid trying something difficult?

Evaluate your risks. If they are low or easy to avoid then definitely try fasting.
