Without compelling evidence to the contrary, I prefer to believe he's a genuine seeker of truth. He presents as a classic example of what Tanya Harter Pierce refers to as 'the disbelief factor' (Outsmart Your Cancer, p14). His situation is not a million miles removed from the cult member who finds it impossible to believe that he has been duped his entire life.
Imagine the psychological effort required to shed years of lamestream indoctrination, conditioning, etc. Not to mention the legal framework in which he has to operate and the financial inducements to toe the line. Breaking free from all that is tantamount to expecting him to commit professional suicide. It requires a personal epiphany and phenomenal courage, and only a few (relatively speaking) are able to make the transition, not to say sacrifice.
But where is he now? Has he been brow-beaten into submission by Tony's unassailable ripostes, or just gone off to attend to his wounds? If the latter, hopefully they have not turned cancerous.
