If you do some research I believe you will find at least 10 different diversions of this species in regards to shape and color.

The ones around my house are black with red on the edges of the wings. I've seen a few with orange on the wing edges and some that are all black. Some are more diamond shaped.

They seem to lay their eggs in mulched lawn and garden materials like grass and weeds. I stopped mulching my lawn cuttings because I didn't want to give them homes.

I side on caution with anything that looks close and that I have never seen until 5 years ago. If they are hanging around your doors and windows just assume it is the Assassin. They are attracted to the CO2 of their victims.

I worry more about my dogs getting infected.

They are slow so I grab them off the door or window with a paper towel and wrap them up into the trash. Wash my hands. I use to just stomp or swat but I realized that would likely make the parasite inside the bug free in the environment for at least a short amount of time.

Bug killers do not work. I've tried them all.
Confirmed by CDC reports. Lighter fluid and a match is what I use when I find a nest on the ground. I know it's fruitless but it makes me feel better. They are everywhere.
