NAC ( cysteine ) and things such as chlorella, probably cilantro that have high levels of cysteine, can kick up heavy metals due to the single SH/thiol group.

In contrast lipoic acid has two SH groups positioned to better hold onto heavy metals.
Mobilizing too much HMs will definitely cause side effects in a person with an HM problem, especially when not taking generous amounts of other antioxidants--vit c and e.
Furthermore Cutler says that roughly 40% of people with an Hg problem will be sensitive to cysteine and will likely have high levels on plasma cysteine test. there are probably several reasons for this--methylation, Fe, glutamine, Mo, etc
So we need thiol groups for detox but have to use them wisely. We don't want to mobilize so much HMs that they overwhelm our body's antioxidant protection. We don't want HMs in a part of the body that isn't so vulnerable to them to end up in the most vulnerable part of the body--brain, thyroid, adrenals, liver, etc.
The ultimate goal is not to get rid of HMs but to be healthy! I doubt that the mice in the Gregus study would have been healthier even though they excreted more HMs than control mice. They had more Hg in brain and organs than controls due to the improperly kicked up Hg.
