Rare indeed. In the overall spectrum of disease it is exceedingly rare.

However, according to the CDC the statistics for 2014 West African outbreak:

Total Cases (Suspected, Probable, and Confirmed): 28,637
Laboratory-Confirmed Cases: 15,249
Total Deaths: 11,315

This translates to a minimum of 39.5 percent mortality out of the total possible cases and a 74.2 percent mortality among confirmed cases.

There are still sporadic cases appearing so it is not officially over yet.

Yes, there are a number of possible treatments and even some possible cures that the medical profession refuses to try because the industry is dominated and probably even held hostage by the pharmaceutical companies.

Why is all of this important to me? First, among the people in that area during the outbreak was my niece who was in Liberia doing volunteer work. Also, I very much appreciate the risk that many volunteers take with their lives and feel that they need every advantage that can be offered to help them survive this illness and many others.

Perhaps you feel that those confronted with this horrible disease should be abandoned and left to die?
