I have battled Seborrheic Dermatitis for 25 years. I have learned the triggers and cause effect which are important for every sufferer to understand.

To date there is no definitive medical explanation for the underlying cause..but TONS of theories. The most popular medical explanation is from allergy to a surface skin yiest (pityrosporum). But The REAL underlying problem appears to be at a genetic level. Specifically, it appears to a chronic genetic Immune system disorder. While it usually is genetic (meaning can't be "cured") it can be controlled.

Seborrheic Dermatitis (SD) appears on the face and scalp as red, patchy, flaky skin on the face most often in the "T" zone of side of nose, below nose, forehead where the most Oil (sebum) glands reside. SD at the celluar level is the skin cells over multiplying. Skin cells are constantly regenerating but SD inflamed areas, the skin cells multiply out of control in reaction to a perceived immune reaction.
SD can appear very quickly within HOURS of a trigger but takes longer to subside. usually day or days. The fact it can flare up quick but takes longer to subside is the reason the condition can spiral out of control and often feels like chasing your own tail. The key to controlling it lies not in being "reactive" with potions/lotions but proactive by controlling the triggers to keep it from flaring in the first place.

Triggers:

There are three main triggers...

Skin Cleanliness, Diet (sugars), Stresses..

((Skin Cleanliness......))
Maintain washed clean and smooth shaven skin.. free from body and external oils/lotions. Using an electric razor to shave both in the morning and at night before bed is critical for guys. 5oclock shadows/beards attract sebum body oils and cause severe outbreaks. The body's naturally produced sebum oil and sebum oil glands plays a role in triggering the immune inflammation response. It is theorized the naturally occurring skin yiest bacteria (pitrosporum) are fed by this sebum and it is the pitrosporum that cause the SD inflammation response. Although a widely held theory by doctors, I do not believe this to be exactly true or the sole culprit.

((Diet................))
Sugars are proven to be highly inflammatory to (SD). Try to maintain a very low sugar/carbohydrate diet. Sugars, esp pure refined Sugar like chocolate WILL cause severe (SD) outbreaks. The Sugar is both a toxin that triggers the immuno system disorder aspect, and a food source for the surface skin yiest. Alcohol also is both a Sugar and a toxin that causes flare up in SD.

((Stresses.................))
This includes Psychological, Physical, Sexual Stresses. Can greatly affect (SD) and cause flare ups. The hormones released from the three create a sitmuli to exacerbate the immuno response characteristic of the (SD) disorder. These are the most difficult triggers to control for obvious reasons as we can not - or desire not to completely eliminate them from our life. But they MUST be considered in the equation.
