I've never bothered to learn identification because it isn't really important, once they're dead, other than a curiosity.

The zapping kills anything big and small, but of course the closer you can get the electrical current to flow thru the area, the better.

Like anything, trying to affect stuff more distant is harder, so the extremities would be harder pressed to have the intensity needed if you zap your head, for example. It's applied physics really. :)

And I should mention if your 'symptoms' seem to get worse after zapping, it means they are carrying an infection of some sort, which most of them do, so you might want to be prepared to fight the infection, just in case.
