Being condescending is not helpful to someone with extreme depression. Telling someone to smile and think about happy times is useless when one is in the deep dark pit of Depression with suicidal tendencies. Saying snap out of it doesn't work either. Never tell someone who is suicidally depressed to have a drink! alcohol is a depressant and if they are on medications, might be a lethal mix and make them follow thru with suicide plan. You need to get more education on Depression before doling out pat advice. It's not just a bad day or a sad occassion. It can be a life long struggle to control emotions. If they could lighten up and pull out of it so easy they wouldn't be asking for help in the first place. Be careful with your uneducated advice it can be very dangerous!
