Interesting points. I disagree, though.
I'd be surprised if anyone can affirm such details without access to his medical records, furthermore personal who does have access are bound by privacy not to divulge such details.

It may very well be that surgery + following liver transplant and the coming with it immune suppressants to prevent transplant rejection have killed him. You can't beat a bug while on immune suppressant, not to say cancer.
BTW cancer survival is calculated for the 5 yrs following the diagnosis. That means if the patinets dies on the next day of the 5th year limit, he is still considered a survivor ! :) There are no studies to my knowledge comparing long-term living chances for those with cancer vs. those without.
