I have NEVER had thyroid test reading that indicate anything but NORMAL range; just had nodules that became a problem. I was about age-50 when they removed three-quarters of my thyroid due to enlarged nodules potentially overwhelming my vocal cords. The surgeon understood my deep concerns about surgery, and worked with me for some years --UNLIKE GP's, who formally rejected me as a patient because I refused surgery by their referred surgeons. The more helpful surgeon also told me the thyroid could grow back with as few as two-cells, and I had 25% of my thyroid intact. Well it DID grow back, but GP's would not take me off synthroid; if I wanted to continue as an active private pilot, I had to continue on the SYNTHROID medication... which you learn after digging, tends to destroy BONE, contributing to osteoporosis. About 3 years ago I took myself off synthroid, then found an endocrinologist who said I felt better because I did not NEED the supplementation. But small modules came back, 3 to 5 cm. NOW I take therapeutic doses (self-medicating) of KELP (which the body converts to usable iodine) for Iodine supplementation, and the nodules are reducing. Woo-hoo. Test results of thyroid function have always remained the same, on Synthroid, off any supplementation, and on KELP. weird. The tested chemicals just auto-adjust; the body is a marvelous thing. Anyway, before you put yourself at risk, you might learn if KELP supplementation (it lets your body CREATE iodine) might work for you. At almost 69 I do not want to do the surgery dance again, and with some osteoarthritis driving me nuts in my right hip I definitely do not want to take a medication that eats bone. I joined this forum SOLELY to let you know my experience. Note again I have NEVER had thyroid test reading that indicate anything but NORMAL range; just had nodules that became a problem. ~turtleflyer
