1And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.b 4But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— 6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

We were dead. He made us alive. By grace. Not a decision we made.

Titus 3:4
4But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.

How were we saved? Through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, and all because of mercy not anything righteous we had done. Making a decision for Christ, if this is what ultimately saves us over someone else, would be a very righteous act. But it says here we were saved by mercy.

And once again Romans 9 says,

14What shall we say then? Is there injustice on God’s part? By no means! 15For he says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” 16So then it depends NOT ON HUMAN WILL or exertion, but on God, who has mercy.

The gospel has been corrupted for a long time. The majority now believe salvation is based on human free will, contrary to what the bible says. It was not always this way. At one time, the majority of the church understood that God was completely sovereign over salvation, and that it was not based on human free will.

What the majority believes never confirms truth. In fact, it's usually the opposite.
