Hi all!
So, I am planning on stepping out of my comfort zone and am going to document (to include photos) progress (I HOPE) and oral healing as a result of oil pulling. It has been exceedingly difficult for me to find visual documentation online regarding oil pulling. There are a few websites, but not many!
So, a brief history of my oral and general health.
I am now 37.
I had braces as a teen, but was not vigilant in flossing of brushing, however I had no cavities until I was 20. I had three cavities and three nasty Amalgam fillings. :(
I was diagnosed with non-hodgkins lymphoma (B-cell) when I was 21. Had 8 cycles of CHOP, radiation therapy, and a stem-cell transplant (BEAM). I was warned by my oncologist that my bone health would suffer and, if I recall, he included my teeth in the mix.
I had all wisdom teeth extracted prior to stem-cell transplant. One cannot mess with infection when the immune system is so severely compromised! :)
I have three children and breastfed them all.
There was a gap in dental visits and I am ashamed to admit that I did not visit a dentist for almost 7 years after my wisdom teeth were pulled. By that time, the enamel on my two front teeth was very thin. My dentist at the time corrected the problem with dental bonding. No cavities at time. I was fairly with regular cleanings for several years.
I was diagnosed hypothyroid about 4 years ago. I was prescribed synthroid, but I stopped taking it about 2 years ago for reasons that I will elaborate if asked about.
My enamel started falling apart after I started on synthroid... no joke. My gumline began receding and the enamel at the base of almost all of my teeth began deteriorating. I had to have my back left molar extracted because of a cavity that was virtually undetected by me (there was a gap in dental care).
My teeth are falling apart at this point. Many fillings have been added to my mouth, lost of bonding in an effort to combat receding enamel. It is nuts... each time I went in for a 6 month check up, I had MORE cavities, but almost ZERO plague or tarter! I brush twice a day, floss, avoid Sugar most of the time. The hygienists always act surprised that I have cavities because my teeth are so clean. :(
My dentist and I had an extensive battle plan, but I have not been in to see him for about 1.5 years (partly because I have been dealing with my youngest son's heart condition [dilated cardiomyopathy] that resulted in a heart transplant last August. I simply have taken time to get in to see my dentist. I need to get in!
SO... the other day I was flossing and a HUGE chunk of a right molar broke off!!! That molar has NEVER hurt. Ever. The enamel on many of my teeth is suffering again near the gum line. I know I have two small (I hope) cavities besides the broken tooth.
I am avoiding going to my dentist because I am SO embarrassed of my teeth. You cannot see the problems unless I open WIDE (my teeth look healthy to the casual observer), but they are AWFUL. I need to get over this mental problem and just schedule an appointment! Wouldn't ya know that we are strapped for cash at the moment! UGH.
SO.... about oil pulling. I have been oil pulling with virgin, organic coconut oil for about one week now, twice a day. I want to see some improvement... the broken tooth clearly has decay, not black, light brown? The other cavities are tiny and on the surface. I want to see if I can correct the receding enamel.
I am not in any pain... so, I do not feel a huge sense of urgency. Thank goodness, because, as I stated before, cash is tight at the moment. Even with our insurance, I suspect the price will be steep (for me at least).
Has anyone documented their progress? I will post my pictures soon...
Thanks!
