One reason is because the half-life of inorganic mercury in the brain is something like 20 yrs (half of it is still there 20 yrs later).
I understand the appeal for something "natural". However, it is not natural for humans to have mercury in their teeth, tons of it spewing from coal fired power plants, etc. We've become poisoned.
Most of the natural methods use foods high in cysteine that contains one SH/thiol group.

Lipoic acid is found in tiny amounts in foods such as broccoli. So it is natural as well. The body naturally converts some of the LA to DHLA.
DHLA contains two SH/thiol groups (mercury magnests) to better hold onto Hg.

Adding to the helpful power--and danger--of LA is that it can move mercury across the blood brain barrier--in BOTH directions.
Therefore it is important to take LA in a way that tends to move Hg out of the brain. Cutler comments on that in this discussion of the Gregus study of LA in mice.
