I feel a little lost right now...
I broke the fast on the evening of day 18 with some diluted cucumber juice. Bad idea breaking it in the evening... I did it because I thought I was going to have to drive the next day to pick my mom up from the airport. I couldn't sleep until after 4 am and then I dry-heaved the next morning and felt pretty bad. And then my roommate ended up driving me to the airport. Oh well. Live and learn. I also needed to be functional because I had been terrible at my job for a while. I might try fasting again in a few months when I have fewer obligations, but I would probably try to be supervised next time, if I could afford it.
Since breaking the fast I've been much more functional and have had energy to accomplish things. But I hope it was the right thing to break it. Since breaking it my pain has started to return in my hands and I had some pain in my foot, which I hadn't had for days.
Today the rheumatologist prescribed methotrexate for me. I haven't picked it up because I am nervous about it. But I feel like I have to because my hands are getting worse. And my original plan was to come off the fast and do an elimination diet, reintroducing foods on a schedule, to try to see what foods were a problem for me and try to improve the RA that way. BUT I am confused about doing this while on medicine, because I don't know if I'll be able to tell if any change is because of the medicine or the food. And I don't really know where to start because I have read so many conflicting things about diet and autoimmune disease. I had originally read from Dr. Fuhrman, but then I was reading about the Autoimmune Protocol from ThePaleoMom website which conflicts with this. And I've heard other people saying conflicting things as well, and I don't know who is right.
I really need some guidance going through this. I found a naturopathic doctor that seemed like she knew what she was talking about re: autoimmune conditions, and she is educated on fasting and supervises it sometimes. So I was going to go to her but I still don't really know how to know if she is the right person, since I've been told I should go to a functional medicine doctor. And maybe I'm overthinking this, but I am not sure what to do. There is so much information and meanwhile my hands are getting worse. There is something weird happening under the skin of my right pointer finger that feels like a bone spur.
On the bright side, I drank coconut water out of a coconut today. Coconuts are great!
Just wanted to end on a good note.
