Driving Under the Influence of Candida

There's a rare syndrome called Gut Fermentation Syndrome, which is also known as Auto-Brewery Syndrome, Ethanol Fermentation Syndrome, Syndrome X, and one or two more names.

You don't hear too much about it and maybe you've never heard anything about it, but in 2013, one case made national headlines, and another case was on the TV show, "The Doctors" in 2014.

Essentially, someone with an overgrowth of yeast and eating a sugar and high carb diet is a prime candidate for this, as yeast ferments sugars into alcohol and carbon dioxide. The alcohol enters the bloodstream and the carbon dioxide causes the gas and bloating so commonly found with candida.

Today, I testified as an expert witness in a case where Gut Fermentation Syndrome is reported to have caused intoxication in someone, so I'm waiting to hear how it turns out. In my opinion, the evidence is very convincing, so now we have to wait and see what the jury thought. I'll write more about this once the case finalizes.

The gut is a very long fermentation tube, so one could expect to see more cases like this one in the future. Candida is known to cause gas and bloating which are byproducts of fermentation. Candida produces acetaldehyde, which is a break down product of alcohol, and 30 times more toxic.

Hopefully, candida doesn't require you to have a designated driver along with you, but if it does, it's time to start the Candida Plan.
