Hi everyone... I'm in the process of weaning off of Hydrocortisone, which I started 8 months ago to address severe Adrenal Fatigue. (I was put onto it with the guidance of an Integrative/Functional Practitioner, and a Yahoo Adrenals/Thyroid forum.)

It appears the adrenals were not the underlying cause of my six year illness, and the IP wants to get me off of this steroid. She was reluctant to put me on it in the first place but it seemed to be a measure of last resort.

(To be clear, I wish I'd never gone on it.)

I began the slow wean back in March, dropping 2.5mg every 2-3 weeks. Things were fine from 25mg until I got to 17.5mg, when I started to get all kinds of symptoms... I wasn't sure at the time they were related to weaning but I'm becoming more convinced.

I continued my wean, and have gotten down to 10mg but the symptoms have continued.

In particular, I started to get full body "itching" and my hair began to fall out quite aggressively. (I'm a 37 year old female with a full head of long hair.) I also get heart "pounding" -- I can feel my heart beating very strongly (not quickly or skipping beats, but pounding as though I just ran up the stairs or something).

Last week, I added 150mg of Adrenal Cortex Extract. The itching is greatly reduced but the hair shedding continues. It's pretty stressful, as you'd imagine.

Does ANYONE have any thoughts about this? I'm now thinking that perhaps this wean needs to wait until the underlying cause of my issues is pin-pointed. I'm waiting on results of Lyme Disease testing as well as a number of other possible infection/parasite/virus tests. Whatever this underlying cause is, it's making my thyroid ineffective... my whole body is just not functioning at full power.

Should I go back up to 17.5mg and leave it there? OR could this itching and hair shedding and heart pounding be unrelated? (For the record, my IP wants me off the HC as soon as humanly possible so she's not a good person to ask about this because her answer would only be, "Keep going.")
