Are these images you see with your eyes open or closed? Are you looking at pictures or real things?

Some years back I used to close my eyes to go to sleep and see scary looking faces I have never seen before or knew where they came from.

I think, like any nightmare that keeps reoccurring, the brain trains itself to think that way or distort an image because you think about it too often. Or triggering it by thinking it may happen.
