When God saves us, he saves us from the bondage of the flesh. He saves us from being in love with our flesh. He saves us from the delusion that there is nothing majorly wrong with our flesh. He shows us where the flesh is wrong, where the flesh is enmity against him, and he helps us from then on in that battle with the flesh. But as long as we are in that battle, there will be suffering, external and internal. Next time you sin, if that ever happens to you, notice how you will grieve your sin against others and towards God and towards yourself even. That is part of the battle.

People that think they can reach perfection in this life don't realize the enormous heights of God's holiness and the severe depravity of their flesh. God will completely save us from these fleshes one day, but it's not yet. So instead of living in a fantasy world thinking we can completely say goodbye to the battle with the flesh and go on our merry way without being bothered by it, we better be learning to fight the battle, and be prepared to suffer. Because from what I hear, the more a person grows in holiness, the more they realize the depravity of the flesh, and the battle gets tougher.
