My personal opinion is that all of these supplements need to be used properly. Most of the adaptogens used come from either Ayurveda or TCM. I have studied Ayurveda and there are very specific guidelines for how to use these supplements and it is all very individualized. None of them are one-size-fits all remedies for any illnesses including adrenal fatigue. I have never studied TCM, but from what little I know, the approach seems similar, individualized for each person based on the current total condition of the body (not just the physical disease that is manifest). If we are just taking random herbs that people recommend for a certain disease, it is really just luck of the draw, whether they will help in any way or not. I would recommend to go to either an Ayurvedic or TCM practitioner but even then, there is no guarantee they are the real thing.

I tried have tried ashwagandha and didn't have good results with it. I find ashwagandha to be overstimulating for me. My body rejects anything that is stimulating. I did actually end up having to experiment a bit to find things that were helpful. Brahmi seemed to be helpful for me. The herbs that actually ended up being the most beneficial for me were marshmallow root, slippery elm, gudduchi and shankapushpi. Shankapushpi and lemon balm are both excellent adoptogens that are not stimulating at all, but again it is all very individualized so it is hard to say who needs what.
