Some more scriptures to think about:
Romans 8:9
9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.
This is a very black and white scripture. You either have the Spirit of Christ or you don't and if you don't, then you don't belong to him.
And John 3:6 says:
That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
So if you belong to Christ, you will have the Spirit of Christ, and you will have been born again by the Holy Spirit.
1 Peter 1:23
23 since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God;
And see how 1 Peter 1:23 correlates with 1 John 3:9:
1 John 3:9
9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
I'm not a KJV only person, but in this particular passage, I do not like the ESV or other translations because I think they twist this passage by saying whoever is born of God does not PRACTICE sin. The KJV I believe has it right by clearly saying the person born of God does not sin period and it's saying that our new identity as Christians does not sin. In Christ we are sinless. We've had his perfect righteousness imputed to us. Our record is completely clear of sin. On judgement day we will be found perfectly righteous because of Christ's righteousness imputed to us. And that all comes through faith and not works of the law, by grace. Our rotten flesh still sins. But that is not our identity as Christians. We are called saints, not sinners.
There was not a single saint in the bible that did not sin in their flesh, and there is not now. Christ is the only sinless one who ever lived, and that is why we must believe in Him and be found in Him to be judged by God as sinless.
Why does God not completely wipe out the flesh when we become Christians so there is no more sinful flesh? I don't know. I've wondered that myself. But I think the answer is that it keeps us very humble to see the rotteness of the flesh, and it keeps us dependent on Jesus and the gospel and it keeps us knowing every day that but for the grace of God alone, we would never be saved.
Titus 3:4-7
4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.
We are either saved by being born of the Holy Spirit, or we are not saved. There is no in between.
1 Peter 1:
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5 who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 9 obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
