I originally had the Mirena inserted in 2010 due to excessive bleeding associated with uterine polyps/cysts/tumors that I had to have surgically removed 1-2 times per year. I also was bleeding through a Super Plus Tampon and Super Plus pad in under an hour for 6 months non-stop and usually had to change my pants a couple times a day causing me to always carry spare clothes for those embarrassing public moments. I had to get monthly Fereheim (not sure of the spelling :0) Infusions for severe anemia and a few blood transfusions due to so much blood loss from my extensive periods and trouble from a previous blood clot in my leg.

I had two blood clots prior to the Mirena insertion and my Hematologist and Gynecologist/Surgeon at the time (I've moved to a different state now) argued at length if it was more dangerous or actually beneficial to have the Mirena versus constant surgeries in which I would have to stop taking blood thinners, etc. and prepare my body for surgery which is dangerous enough for us folks that get clots but.... The Mirena won in the end. I was having it inserted during my last polyp/cyst removal surgery 4 years ago. I didn't need the Mirena for any means of birth control as I previously had one ovary removed and both tubes completely removed from complications with a blood clot in one and polyps/cysts/tumors in the other but she noted the Mirena should irritate the lining of my uterus enough that polpys/cysts/tumors would be unable to form and hopefully stop my excessive bleeding, cramping, and Anemia.

After getting the Mirena inserted I wanted that thing out of my body asap a few days after surgery and called my gynecologist to express my concern as it was very uncomfortable, was causing severe cramping, major mood swings, and I felt like I had an internal metal tail that was way too long for my liking (too much information ~ :0) but she all but begged me to try and bear with the symptoms/side effects until my 3 or 4 week post-surgery follow-up and if I was still uncomfortable she would remove it. By the time I had my follow-up appt. the discomfort from the Mirena was basically gone but I still felt like my "internal tail" was way too long but she assured me it was as short as she could make it.

I'm not so sure your doctor is right telling you losing weight will remedy your situation as I've had the same problem when I was thin, then when I gained weight, and lost it again (but I'm in no way a physician or medical professional). All I know is in the past I've gained 80 lbs going up to a weight of 203 lbs at 5'2" and had the same trouble with my periods/uterine cysts, etc as I did before gaining the weight and after losing all of the weight plus some getting down to 104 while being on high doses of blood thinners at the time.

The only remedy for my excessive bleeding before the Mirena was having surgery to remove the polyps/cysts/tumors but I'd typically start to have trouble again within a month or two afterwards. The Mirena was the perfect solution to my excessive bleeding for the past 4 years where I occasionally had spotting for maybe a day or two which barely warranted a need for the thinnest panty liner. Although I still really can't/shouldn't complain I'm now experiencing a heavier period for about 2 days (which USUALLY still doesn't warrant the use of a tampon at all but occasionally a regular tampon or thin pad although I usually use both for fear of my previous period troubles reappearing) with really severe cramps a few days prior/during and then lighter spotting for 3-5 days thereafter which usually only happens every 2-3 months.

I'm not sure I will be able to have another Mirena inserted when I get this one out soon as my previous Hematologist thought I was just really unlucky previously having two blood clots when in fact I have a rare blood clotting disorder(Protein S Type II) that was incorrectly diagnosed until 9 months ago so I'm not sure if my new Gynecologist and new Hematologist are going to decide if having a new one put in is the right treatment for me anymore.

All I know is I don't want to go down the embarrassing road again of needing to pack a few pairs of pants/underwear before leaving the house to go to work, run errands, meet a friend for lunch, etc. like one does for infants and potty training toddlers.

I hope you find a resolution to your troubles as well as I know all too well how difficult it can be living that way and as a side note....don't let a pending doctor's bill stop you from getting the treatment you need/deserve. I'm not recommending blow off the doctor/hospital and go buy a new fur coat but if you are finally strapped and have no other means to pay such bills you still have the right to be seen at the hospital and still have the right to surgery if it's going to improve your health (understandably elective surgeries don't qualify). At least in the United States they can't take your home, car, possessions away from you as long as you make arrangements to make even a $2-$5 payment per month on your hospital/doctors bills and you can always apply for Free Care at the hospital.
