I had pretty severe candida on and off for years without knowing it. I eventually saw a naturopath who diagnosed it and put me on a very restricted diet. she also sold me some supplements, can't remember what now.

It did improve, but if I went off the diet eg at Christmas, it came back. I then saw a group of students at a holistic healing college, who gave me a zinc test. Turns out I was very deficient in zinc.

Without zinc, you don't make enough stomach acid, so food more or less 'ferments' instead of being digested normally. The tricky part is, without enough stomach acid you can't absorb zinc!

So I took both zinc and beta hydrochloride for a month to get things in balance, then kept up the zinc. Many soils are lacking in zinc, so deficiency is quite common.

This was several years ago, and the candida has never returned. Most of the time I can eat what I like, but I try to stick to a healthy diet.

I hope this helps some of you.
