Since you posted on the New Medicine forum, I will give you a Dr. Hamer type answer. HIV has to do with intense feelings of unworthiness and soiling. There is also a component of intense feelings of powerlessness. These people may be unable to love themselves, thus they seek affection via sexual contact.

He may or may not be aware of these feelings they likely are subconscious
