absolutely! Not only can stress and external situations *cause* depletions in crucial neurochemicals required to "stay above water", but diet alone without external stressful factors can cause Depression and such things.
It is unfortunate that many of us are not getting all the "brain and happiness food" within our diets that we require to survive in this world, stay energized, cope in healthy ways, etc.
For instance one of the chemicals that the brain uses to make serotonin is an amino acid called L-Tryptophan. The body literally breaks it down from the diet and turns it into serotonin for the brain.
So obviously if you take a L-Tryptophan supplement (or 5-HTP which is part of the same conversion process)you are directly feeding your brain with happiness juice.
But the difficult part lies in defining exactly what depletions are causing your condition, as many people suffering from stress, depression, etc, respond differently to a multitude of herbs/vitamins/supplement, etc.
This place contains a wealth of information about how depletions develop and cause very specific conditions. http://www.healthrecovery.com/
It can be a little overwhelming to learn all of the facts about nutrition and Depression and sift through the cure_all fads, but after some work and lifestyle changes, you can definitely feel much better without resorting to the pharmo_crud.
For me, simply following a few basic rules has led to tremendous breakthroughs. 1) Daily cardio exercise as the heart needs to be nice and strong to pump all of the crucial juices throughout the body and brain. And exercise stimulates oxygenation, immunity, circulation, and so much more.
2) QUITTING coffee (only green tea and pretty heavily dilluted) as well as all other unhealthy sugar/caffiene laden junk (soda, junk food, etc)
3) TONS of water every day.
4) Fresh fruit and veggies in abundance every day.
5) healthy diet
6) B complex every day, and a decent multivitamin (I like the powdered isotonix products, instantly absorbed into blood)
7) a couple supplements which have proven to work for *me*
And I am also a big fan of Dr. Schulze and his superfood.
But in short, yes! Many believe that it is all about diet because when they changed their diet, they changed their lives.
Hope this helps,
brian
