I have suffered from SD for 2 years. In the last couple of months I have discovered what was causing it... Histamine Intolerance .

Histamine is a substance our body uses for many functions, but if levels get too high, we can suffer from skin, digestive and mood/mental issues. A big problem is that many foods contain higher levels of histamine and that in some people, the level of the enzyme diamine oxydase (DAO) that breaks down dietary histamine is low.

In Aug. 2014, I figured out my problem when my scalp and face got very itchy, along with a lot of scalp flaking and scabbing soon after eating a many days old stew along with a number of other high histamine foods (I had read about HI, but not with a direct SD connection). I cut out high histamine foods:leftovers, fermented foods (cheeses, yogurt, sauerkraut, wine, vinegar), spinach, tomato, etc. My SD got better! If I keep my histamine levels low, I have no SD. If I don't, it starts to come back. I also use a DAO supplement, Histame when I eat out and can't eat low histamine.

I also continue to use Head&Shoulders because the active ingredient breaks down histamine on the scalp. I also supplement with Vit. C and B6 which are supposed to help the body produce DAO. Also, I make sure to take probiotics that do not produce histamine and do break it down. Many lactobaccilus strains actually produce histamine.

I have been eating low carb for 4 years and eat paleo/primal. Zinc didn't help and oil of oregano didn't really either. Neither did Nizoral shampoo. I guess fungus isn't the issue for me.

There is actually a lot of info on Histamine Intolerance on the internet. Has anyone else looked into this condition or even heard of it?
