I've had Seborrheic Dermatitis (itchy, scabby, inflammed dandruff on my scalp, sometimes in ear canals)for about 2 years. Head & Shoulders helped a little, but Nizoral shampoo did nothing. I eat a low carb, paleo diet and this summer was on fairly high doses of oil of oregano. Neither seems to help (actually, the diet predates the dermatitis). I had a feeling it wasn't likely to be caused by fungus. Like you, when I went somewhere warm (Hawaii) and spent a few long days in the ocean, my scalp seemed to get better. However, by the end of the fortnight, the dandruff was starting to return. In August, I finally figured out that I am histamine intolerant (after eating many days leftover stew along with other high histamine foods, my scalp got extremely bad and my face was itchy too). I did some online research and cut way down on histamine in my diet. Now, as long as I stick to it, my scalp is excellent. I also use Histame, an enzyme that breaks down histamine from food when I can't avoid a higher histamine meal. The reason that the Head&Shoulders works for me is that the active ingredient breaks down histamine on the skin. I'm also wondering if, while in Hawaii, I was at first eating low histamine foods too.
I don't know if histamine is affecting your dermatitis, but it might be something to look into!
