A theory is an argument/story that is supported by all the evidence. Repeat ALL. No cherrypicking.
It is a product of the scientific method which requires observation, then experimentation, then critical examination by peers. If it survives that, then it is a theory.
Except on the internet, where a theory is anything from a hoax to a statistic.
