Interesting that melatonin could cause sleep paralysis.. Did you feel well-rested on melatonin? Or did it make you feel groggy in the morning? Do you know what caused your sleep paralysis when you were younger? I had never experienced sleep paralysis until my hypothyroidism developed into what seemed suspiciously like myxedema coma, and my spirit/consciousness started slipping out of my physical body without me even willing it. I don't get sleep paralysis as often now since I find it hard to leave my body on a constant basis when I’m not a) extremely exhausted or b) near death.
It's kind of funny that you experienced sleep paralysis after reading my story. Did you happen to have the "old hag syndrome" (the sensation that something is on top of you, pinning you down)? I think that's another reason why people in the past associated sleep paralysis with demonic encounters. In all my sleep paralysis experiences, I never felt the feeling of heaviness in my chest; I also rarely saw visual figures/objects but when I did, I often perceived them to be near the foot of my bed, not on top of me, and I was able to will them to change shape or disappear altogether (hence why I could say with 100% certainty they’re my own creations and not some outside force or entity).
