I don't know of any side effects so far but of course start out slow and increase the amounts slowly and make sure it is Food Grade, Perma Guard is the name of the company that sells the food grade and you can get a 10 pound bag for around 13 dollars, I get mine from a place that sells fertilizer because DE is also used as a fertilizer. You will have to research that to understand it.
