Iron increases bacterial growth, perhaps there may be a link. If any foreign organism such as a bacterium were to attach itself to the myelin sheath, then the immune system, in the process of killing the bacterium might damage the sheath.

This depends on a lot. If all things are optimum, yes.

I doubt that it is actually autoimmune but rather the attempt to eliminate a virus infection, quite possible HHV-6.
