Yes. It's what protects them (among other things) from the hosts immune system. It is also why Food grade DE is effective- it is able to cut up their exoskeleton and as a result dehydrates them to death from the outside in. Doesn't happen in one dose though; have to keep chipping and chipping away at it; Over time use the DE and use a lot of it and it will cut em up! In my experience at least, it's been very successful.
