Thanks for these great tips Gina. I tried Lithium Orotate a while back and it just made me feel bloated. Maybe when my thyroid is back in fighting shape from the Iodine, I will give it another try. Maybe Lithium Aspartate is better?

I've looked into the amino acid regimen for bipolar disorder as it was recommended by an acupuncturist. Trouble is the expense on top of all the other supplements I take. With insurance, my psych meds come to about $50 a month and the amino acid regimen would be more like $200. Not a difference I can afford right now.

If I do decide to go off the meds, I'm thinking it would be at least 6 months down the line and VERY slowly. I get terrible withdrawals. That alone is a reminder of how toxic they are, but for now I need to accept this necessary evil until the underlying causes are addressed.

The studies connecting thyroid disease to bipolar disorder are very illuminating. It really makes sense because looking back on how my moods have correlated with my wildly fluctuating TSH. While it's not a reliable test for thyroid function, it's all I've got in terms of medical history because of our deeply flawed health care system.

I know it must sound ungrateful, but sometimes I wonder if I would have been better off without medical insurance because I would have been more proactive and creative with my self-treatment. Oh well, no use looking back. I can make a change now and hopefully reclaim my health.
