You have to get rid of the toxic load from your liver and biliary system otherwise it will be reabsorbed. The only way is by a laxative and magnesium citrate is one of the mildest. Dave Frahm developed this protocol for people just like you. It is the mildest protocol but I can understand your concerns. However, when we are ill we can engage in a behaviour called catastrophizing which is a type of anxiety. You need to try and overcome this obstacle and compromise.

Some people who have wanted to avoid magnesium in all its forms have used a laxative of their choice. All laxatives will disrupt the electrolyte balance. There is some information on the following link:
