SUMMARY
Experiments designed to test the duration of inhibition, by excess iodide, on organic binding of Iodine in the thyroid gland are described. It is shown that the inhibitory action of excess Iodide on the normal rat thyroid is temporary in nature. Inhibition lasted for about 26 hours. Despite the continued maintenance of a high level of plasma total Iodine (100-200 gamma per cent), the formation of significant amounts of organic Iodine was resumed after 26 hours.

Received for publication August 30, 1949.

That damning research (Wiki):
In 1948, Wolff and Chaikoff reported that injection of iodine in rats almost completely inhibited organification (oxidation of iodide) in the thyroid gland.[3][4] Patients with Graves' disease are more sensitive than euthyroid patients,[5] and iodine has been used to manage Graves' disease.

So, only a year later, the exact same scientists proved that their original outcome wasn't as dramatic as the world believed. The medical world sure was eager to apply the original research and to ignore the new research.
