Thanks. I don't think it is water table issues as it is high ground and drains very well. I'm pretty confident that after 50 years the biomass has slowly "climbed" up starting at the bottom and as the pit filled higher and higher, the walls became non-permeable with more biomass so now the only permeable part of the pit is the top couple of inches of the walls.

I think I'll drain most of the tank and treat with a bunch of sodium percarbonate, hope it starts to drain on its own, then aerate.

I have seen many of the aeration post/links. I'm looking at a Medo pump--heavier duty, longer lasting, outdoor rated, and can be rebuilt if it wears out, but a little more expensive (but much cheaper than the "packaged septic aeration solutions.)

I'll let you know what happens . . .
