There’s been so much hype about the curative benefits of turmeric, and rightfully so. This spice has been used for cooking and as a natural medicine in the East, since antiquity. And more recently, there have been studies published proving that, curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, is MORE effective than the most prescribed BigPharma poisons on the market in fighting and preventing diseases like cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and other chronic illnesses.

Curcumin is found in the rhizome, or “root,” hence the moniker “turmeric root” you often see on labels of supplements bottles and packages of the ground spice. What is often unmentioned in many of the articles published about the benefits of turmeric/curcumin is its water insolubility and poor oral bioavailability. In other words, turmeric does not dissolve in water, and unfortunately, due to rapid metabolism and system elimination, pure curcumin is very poorly absorbed into your bloodstream, making many turmeric supplements or regimens that involve ingesting it with water completely INEFFECTIVE!

There are supplements and turmeric blends on the market that contain black pepper extract, or piperine, which helps the body absorb the herb into the bloodstream. And, while black pepper extract helps the bioavailability of this spice tremendously, there are some risks. Those taking medications should know that black pepper extract inhibits the absorption of the prescriptions into the system, elevating levels in the bloodstream, which can be fatal. Avoid this substance if you are taking medications! Piperine is also a known central nervous system depressant and those with sensitivity or allergies to pepper should also avoid it.

So what’s the SAFEST way to get the MOST curcumin bioavailability? Dissolving it in fat. Curcumin is fat soluble, which is why the turmeric golden milk, which combines turmeric with oils and milk (which both contain fat) is so super beneficial! When dissolved in fats like olive, coconut, Black Seed, or flaxseed oils, ghee, and milk the curcumin reaches the lymphatic system and bloodstream, enhancing its curative abilities.
Cooking with certified organic Turmeric on a regular basis and incorporating it in your marinades, pastes, vinaigrette, seasoning, is an excellent way to increase your intake of this healthy spice.

Remember According to Ayurveda Honey is considered an “anupana”, a vehicle or carrier for other herbs and spices, to increase their efficacy. So mixing turmeric into honey also enhances its medicinal qualities, and helps to reach deeper tissues. Turmeric, raw honey, and ground black seed or black seed oil is an excellent and healthy blend, enriched with all of the disease combating elements inherent in these ingredients.

I’m reposting Dr. Khalsa’s Turmeric golden milk video. Remember, instead of the Udo’s, try substituting a cold-pressed undiluted black seed oil.
