halogen displacement theory in a test tube is significantly different than halogen displacement in the human body. The human body is a closed system that regulates (or attempt to) various toxins, heavy metals etc. However some of them so closely resemble needed elements that those elements can not easily be distinguished from whats needed.
In the body Iodine binds to the receptor on cells. Think of the receptor as a key hole and the Iodine the key. Halogens fit the same receptor that Iodine does but they do not properly "unlock it" (ie activate it). This basically removes the receptor from the equation and it cant be used to properly perform its function.
We already know that by and large we have significantly more unneeded halogens in our bodies than we do iodine and so the chance of any given receptor being occupied by iodine is greatly reduced.
A oversimplification analogy. Take a bucket and fill it with:
100 red marbles (ie Fluorine)
100 blue marbles (ie Chlorine)
100 green marbles (ie Bromine)
100 white marbles (ie Iodine)
now close your eyes reach in and grab a marble, you have a 25% chance of getting a white one. Now, if the bucket only holds 400 marbles and you start to put in more white ones whats going to happen? marbles will start to be flushed out of the body.
Now we know that when we reach iodine sufficiency iodine itself will also be flushed out as excess thats not needed is simply passed along.
By taking large doses of iodine we do 2 things. We increase our chances that iodine will attach to any given receptor AND we increase the total amount of halogens in the body causing the body to excrete the excess (some of which of course will also be the extra iodine).
Going back to the bucket analogy above, the numbers above would be lets say the average joe not supplementing with iodine. Now by taking high dose iodine we are in essence dumping the following quantities of marbles in the bucket every day...
100 red marbles (ie Fluorine)
100 blue marbles (ie Chlorine)
100 green marbles (ie Bromine)
400 white marbles (ie Iodine)
Remember the bucket can only hold 400 marbles and we are putting in 700 so every day we are going to cause the body to get rid of excess and because we have so much more iodine than the rest we know that we will surely lose some iodine but also the other toxic halides.
The main difference is the human body isnt an open top container and the process of removing elements isnt as simply as overfilling it and having it flow out the top.
