First order of business is locate the pit and identify what design it is.
Some are nothing more than a long perforated pipe sitting in a Deep rock filled hole.
Some are actual perforated concrete tanks.

Next step is to inspect - Top off - to see how much sediment has accumulated and if it can be pumped out.
Confirm no blockage from the Septic tank to the pit.

Have you inspected the Septic tank for damage - lost Baffles? If the output pipe has no baffle for protection the line could easily become clogged.

No matter what is blocked, you should only have a few gallons of water coming back into a partially drained septic tank.
.65 Gal per foot on a 4" line.

Remember - First you know, then you plan you attack.
