One common cause of sleep onset insomnia is low levels of thryoid horomone (usable by the body), which is quite often undetectable in standard "GP" thyroid tests. When this happens, the body secretes more adrenaline to compensate for the imbalance... and the mind races, its impossible to fall asleep. When I added thyroid glandular (after stabilizing my adrenals), I would fall right asleep.
A common cause of waking up in the middle of the night is blood Sugar imbalances. When these are corrected, the awakenings stop.
Aside from correcting thyroid levels (if needed) and diet, some additional insomnia treatments to consider:
.5 to 1.5 grams of L-tryptophan (similar to 5-HTP, but works a little better for me).
1500mg to 3000mg inositol - curtails the mental "chattering" while falling sleep
1 to 4 tablets of Valerian root extract - natural sedative
