The arguments by PhD chemists such as Boyd Haley and Andy Cutler about mercury's effects are the most compelling I've read.

Alpha Lipoic Acid can move inorganic mercury across the blood brain barrier and out of the brain. However if it is not used correctly it can more more Hg *into* the brain. Cutler comments on a study on mice.
